Overview

The museum was and still is the first stop for all those who love to explore the natural world and the various forms of life on Earth.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The museum includes five basic scientific departments for preservation and archiving: (the National Herbal and Plant Reserve, the National Collection of Shells, the National Collection of Insects, the National Collection of Animals and Skeletons, and the National Collection of Fossils). Each collection includes a number of samples preserved in different ways, with an electronic database. The museum annually receives samples from various regions of the Sultanate collected by scientists, specialists, students and amateurs.

It displays six reservoirs that include the environment of all the governorates: Musandam, the Northern Mountains, Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, the Dhofar Mountains, and the various Omani islands.

The geology of Oman through the ages
A number of different fossils are displayed, ranging in age from 800-245 million years.

The diversity of Oman’s wild animals
It is displaying forms of wildlife in the Sultanate, as there are several tanks displaying some of the stuffed animals such as: the lynx (earth hugger), which was taken as the museum’s logo, the Arabian oryx, the Arabian leopard, the Arabian tahr, and other mammals. Reptiles, amphibians, and insects, and there is a corner dedicated to seashells that abound on the coast of Oman.

The Whale Hall
It displays information about the types of whales found in the seas and oceans of the world in general and in the seas of the Sultanate of Oman in particular, as it displays the skeleton of a sperm whale, in addition to the skeletons of other whales, dolphins, etc.
